Unintended Consequences of Recent Windows Updates
Recent updates to Windows have caused a stir among users and administrators due to unexpected outcomes affecting both Windows Server 2022 and Windows 10. Microsoft has acknowledged these issues, which stem from the latest security updates.
Unexpected App Behavior in Windows 10
Following the installation of April’s security patches and subsequent updates, some Windows 10 users have reported unusual behavior with certain apps. Specifically, when users hover the mouse over an app icon in the taskbar or start menu and right-click to open a context menu, an “Open with:” dialog appears instead of performing the expected function. This issue affects various apps, including Microsoft Teams, the new Outlook, and the Snip & Sketch tool. Microsoft suggests bringing the app to the foreground and using the interface menus to complete tasks as a temporary workaround.
Windows Server 2022 Experiences Server Disruptions
The latest patches have not only attempted to secure systems but have also inadvertently disrupted server operations, particularly affecting cloud-based SQL servers. Admins report issues primarily with Azure Synapse SQL Serverless Pool databases, which are showing a “Recovery pending” status. This problem is more likely to occur when using Customer-Managed Keys (CMK) and Azure Synapse Dedicated SQL Pools.
Microsoft is currently rolling out a server-side fix to enterprise customers using Azure SQL to address these disruptions.
Ongoing Efforts to Resolve Update Issues
While Microsoft is working on permanent solutions to these issues, users are advised not to uninstall the updates despite the disruptions. Historically, Windows updates have occasionally caused such unintended reactions. For instance, the April updates previously disrupted VPN connections, a problem which has since been resolved by Microsoft.
