Tesla is set to initiate construction of its much-anticipated Gigafactory in Mexico next week, as announced by the Governor of Nuevo León. This development follows a series of delays linked to environmental permit concerns that have postponed the project’s commencement.
Despite the recent halt, some initial groundwork has already been laid in preparation for the factory’s establishment. The official groundbreaking ceremony, which was previously deferred, is now rescheduled for March 3. This announcement was made by Governor Samuel García Sepúlveda and reported by the Mexican news outlet Milenio. The Gigafactory, dubbed Giga Mexico, will be situated in Santa Catarina, a part of the Monterrey metropolitan area, specifically near the Terralta sector. Governor García Sepúlveda expressed enthusiasm about the project, highlighting its significance for the local community and its potential to attract substantial investment and development.
In his statement, García Sepúlveda drew a comparison between the forthcoming 2026 World Cup, set to be hosted in Nuevo León’s Rayados stadium, and the Tesla factory. He pointed out that while the World Cup is a significant event, it is transient, whereas the Tesla factory represents a legacy that will benefit the region’s families for generations.
Earlier in the month, the Governor had hinted at a March start date for construction but noted that environmental permit updates were necessary due to the project’s larger-than-anticipated scale. He revealed that the government had requested an extension for the environmental permitting process. García Sepúlveda also mentioned ongoing discussions with Tesla’s management in Mexico regarding various logistical aspects, including electricity, water, and environmental concerns. He underscored the state’s efforts in preparing infrastructure to support the factory, expressing optimism that Tesla would soon make a formal announcement regarding the commencement of construction.
This moves by Tesla to expand its manufacturing footprint into Mexico marks a significant step in the company’s global strategy, promising economic growth and technological advancement for the region.
