A new study conducted by Hitachi Rail has unveiled a strong global consensus in favor of enhancing green travel infrastructure, particularly through the expansion of high-speed rail networks. In a sweeping survey of 12,000 participants across 12 cities worldwide, including Berlin, Copenhagen, and San Francisco, an overwhelming majority expressed a preference for replacing short-haul flights with high-speed rail options, citing environmental concerns and the desire for more efficient travel alternatives.

A Shift Towards Greener Travel

The survey, orchestrated by research firm SavantaComres, indicates a significant 64% of respondents worldwide support the idea of banning air travel on routes where high-speed rail alternatives are viable. Moreover, 56% of participants are in favor of imposing higher taxes on air travel if the revenue is allocated to funding new high-speed rail lines. This reflects a growing public demand for sustainable long-distance travel options, with over a third of respondents (35%) anticipating they will travel more by train in the next five years.

Driving Forces Behind the Modal Shift

Despite the traditional dominance of cars and planes for long-distance travel, the study suggests a readiness among the public to switch to trains, particularly if travel times are reduced or costs are more competitive. Specifically, 63% would consider taking the train over driving or flying if it saved them an hour, and 75% would make the switch if it were more cost-effective.

Interestingly, while only 14% of respondents identified sustainability as a primary factor influencing their travel decisions, there is substantial backing for legislative measures to promote green travel. In France, where a policy to curb short-haul flights in favor of rail has already been implemented, support for such measures is the highest at 75%.

The Urban Transport Landscape

Within cities, the desire for improved public transport is evident, with 72% of global respondents indicating they would use public transport more if it offered better connections and shorter journey times. Despite the lingering issue of overcrowding as a deterrent for some, the decline in Covid-19 concerns as a barrier suggests a readiness among the public to return to public transport, provided services are optimized for convenience and efficiency.

Looking Ahead: The Call for Connected and Sustainable Transport

Hitachi Rail’s CEO, Giuseppe Marino, emphasized the importance of the survey’s findings for policymakers and transport operators. The clear demand for more connected and environmentally friendly transport options presents an industry challenge to accelerate the development of seamless and sustainable rail services. As Hitachi Rail continues to pioneer innovations in high-speed and urban rail systems, the focus remains on meeting this global demand for greener, more efficient travel solutions.

This survey sheds light on a pivotal moment in transportation, highlighting a collective desire to move towards a more sustainable and interconnected future. With significant support for the expansion of high-speed rail as a greener alternative to air travel, the stage is set for transformative changes in how we navigate the globe.
