Dr. Noel Peter Tan, a seasoned expert in nanotechnology, is making significant strides in the research and development (R&D) scene of Western Visayas, Philippines. After honing his skills abroad, Dr. Tan has joined the University of San Agustin in Iloilo as a Balik Scientist, a program that brings experienced Filipino researchers back home to contribute to local science and technology.
Leading Edge Research Center
At the university, Dr. Tan leads the Center for Advanced New Materials, Engineering, and Emerging Technologies (CANMEET). This center, the first of its kind in Western Visayas, focuses on creating new materials and technologies. It features specialized labs like the Smart Packaging Laboratory and the Membranes Laboratory.
Innovations in Bioplastics and Desalination
One of Dr. Tan’s key projects is developing biodegradable packaging made from plant waste. Unlike traditional plastics, which are derived from petroleum, these bioplastics come from renewable sources and can decompose naturally, reducing environmental impact.
Additionally, Dr. Tan is spearheading a program to improve seawater desalination technology. This project aims to create a more efficient desalination system that uses solar energy, which could provide a sustainable water source for communities.
Support and Future Prospects
The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and other local authorities have praised Dr. Tan’s work for pushing the boundaries of nanoscience and contributing to environmental solutions. His efforts are part of the larger goal of enhancing the Philippines’ capabilities in science and technology, particularly through the DOST’s Balik Scientist Program.
