The Electricity Landscape in 2024: During a Surge in Demand Due to Heat Waves and Economic Growth
SHARE

The world is facing a surge in electricity demand in 2024, the fastest in years, driven by rising temperatures and economic growth. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), the anticipated 4% growth this year marks the highest since 2007, excluding sharp rebounds in 2010 and 2021 following the global financial crisis and the COVID-19 demand drop.

Key Factors Driving Demand

  • Hotter Weather: Persistent heat waves are significantly increasing the need for cooling.
  • Economic Growth: Rapid development, particularly in China, India, and the US, fuels higher electricity consumption.
  • Strong Demand: Expanding industries and residential needs are boosting power usage.

Clean Energy on the Rise

Despite this surge, the transition to clean energy is also accelerating. The IEA forecasts that by 2025:

  • Solar Power: Expected to meet roughly half of the global electricity demand growth.
  • Wind Power: Along with solar, it will account for nearly 75% of the increase in electricity supply.

The Role of AI in Power Consumption

Artificial Intelligence (AI) continues to drive electricity demand. However, predicting AI’s future power consumption is challenging due to:

  • Unreliable Historical Data: Lack of consistent data on data center power usage.
  • Deployment Uncertainties: Varying rates of AI technology implementation.

In the US, estimates for AI-related electricity consumption by 2030 vary widely, with data centers projected to use anywhere between 4% to 10% of the total electricity. The IEA’s own estimates suggest that data centers, excluding cryptocurrency operations, will see their share of global electricity demand rise from 1-1.3% in 2022 to about 1.5%-3% by 2026.

Heat Waves and Power Grids

May 2024 marked the 12th consecutive month of record-breaking temperatures, significantly impacting power demand. Countries like Vietnam and the US are experiencing unprecedented cooling needs, straining their power grids. This trend is expected to continue as more households in developing economies acquire air conditioners.

To address these challenges, the IEA report highlights the importance of:

  • Higher Efficiency Standards: Implementing stricter energy efficiency measures for air conditioning units.
  • Power Grid Expansion: Strengthening and expanding power grids to maintain reliability.

Conclusion

The world is navigating a critical period where the demand for electricity is skyrocketing due to heat waves and economic growth. While clean energy sources like solar and wind are set to meet a significant portion of this demand, challenges remain, especially with the increasing power needs of AI and the strain on power grids. Effective solutions, such as improving air conditioning efficiency and reinforcing power infrastructure, are essential to ensure a stable and sustainable energy future.
