Meta Launches New Funding Initiative for MR Apps
Meta is taking a significant step forward in the Extended Reality (XR) space with the introduction of the Meta Quest Lifestyle App Accelerator. This new program is designed to support and fund innovative Mixed Reality (MR) lifestyle applications, marking a pivotal shift from Meta’s previous focus primarily on gaming.
Opportunity for Innovators and Creators
The Meta Quest Lifestyle App Accelerator is inviting submissions of MR app ideas until October 15, 2024. This initiative is not just a funding opportunity but a comprehensive support program that includes mentoring and providing necessary resources. Successful applicants will be announced on December 31, 2024, with project development kicking off in 2025.
Diverse Categories and Broad Accessibility
Meta is looking for creative applications across various lifestyle categories such as fashion, beauty, home improvement, design, shopping, cooking, music, DIY, and arts & crafts. The good news for developers worldwide is that this program isn’t limited to just a few countries. Teams in locations supported by the Meta Quest—where the headsets are sold directly by Meta—can also receive up to three Meta Quest 3 development kits.
Furthermore, participating teams will retain complete ownership of their intellectual property. This move by Meta not only encourages broader development within the XR industry but also enhances the app library available on Meta’s platforms.
Why This Matters
With the Meta Quest headsets already ranked among the top in the VR market, Meta’s continuous efforts to expand and enhance the XR industry are commendable. This new funding initiative could lead to significant developments in how we experience lifestyle applications through Mixed Reality, making Meta’s platforms even more attractive to both developers and users.
