At a recent workshop in Abuja, Prof. Abdullahi Mustapha, Director General of the National Biotechnology Research and Development Agency (NBRDA), emphasized the critical role of biotechnology in transforming agriculture. The event, organized by the Open Forum on Agricultural Biotechnology (OFAB) in Africa’s Nigeria chapter and supported by the African Agricultural Technology Foundation (AATF), gathered farmers to discuss the benefits of biotechnology and biosafety.
During the workshop, Prof. Mustapha highlighted how modern biotechnology could reduce the reliance on harmful chemicals in farming, thus preserving the environment. He pointed out that biotechnology not only boosts crop yields and improves their nutritional content but also strengthens crops against pests, diseases, and harsh weather. This, he noted, could significantly enhance agricultural productivity in Nigeria, ensuring food security and supporting farmers’ livelihoods.
Dr. Jean Baptiste, AATF’s Regional Representative for West Africa, also spoke at the event. He assured farmers of AATF’s commitment to advocate for policies that create a favorable climate for innovation and to provide access to technologies that improve farming practices.
The workshop also featured insights from Bello Abubakar, National President of the Maize Association of Nigeria (MAAN), who stressed the importance of training and sensitization for farmers to keep up with advancements in seed and farming technology.
The gathering underscored the role of agriculture as more than just a source of livelihood; it is seen as a foundation of the economy, a path to empowerment, and a key to environmental sustainability. The participants left with a renewed sense of purpose and the tools needed to harness the power of biotechnology for a better agricultural future.
