In a landmark move towards sustainable aviation, Airbus, the aerospace titan, has entered into a strategic alliance with energy giant TotalEnergies. This collaboration is set to revolutionize the aviation industry by significantly cutting down CO2 emissions through the development and utilization of Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF).

Under the banner of achieving net carbon neutrality in aviation by the year 2050, the partnership is poised to play a pivotal role in reducing the aviation sector’s environmental footprint. TotalEnergies’ SAF, known for its potential to slash CO2 emissions by up to 90% across its lifecycle compared to traditional fossil fuels, stands at the core of this initiative.

The collaboration is structured around two primary objectives: Firstly, ensuring the supply of SAF by TotalEnergies to meet over half of Airbus’ fuel requirements in Europe. Secondly, embarking on a joint research and innovation quest aimed at concocting 100% sustainable fuels that are not only compatible with current and future aircraft designs but also effective in reducing both CO2 and non-CO2 emissions, including contrails.

Both Airbus and TotalEnergies have expressed their shared ambition to champion SAF technology and fortify their partnership to lead the aviation industry towards decarbonization. TotalEnergies has been a steadfast SAF supplier to Airbus for its aircraft deliveries in Toulouse since 2016 and has fueled several pioneering SAF flights, marking significant milestones in aviation history.

Patrick Pouyanné, Chairman and CEO of TotalEnergies, highlighted the company’s commitment to the development of SAF as a cornerstone of its transition strategy. “Our strategic alliance with Airbus is a testament to our collective resolve to tackle aviation decarbonization head-on,” Pouyanné remarked, setting an ambitious target of producing 1.5 million tons of SAF annually by 2030.

Echoing this sentiment, Airbus CEO Guillaume Faury emphasized the urgency of scaling up SAF deployment to meet the 2030 carbon emission reduction targets. “This partnership exemplifies the aerospace and energy sectors’ united front in addressing the environmental challenges facing aviation. We are committed to achieving our decarbonization goals and ensuring aviation’s sustainable future,” Faury stated.

This groundbreaking partnership between Airbus and TotalEnergies marks a significant leap forward in the quest for a more sustainable aviation industry, promising a cleaner, greener future for air travel.
