OpenAI, a leader in artificial intelligence, has announced a groundbreaking partnership with Common Sense Media, the renowned nonprofit organization dedicated to providing safe media and technology for children. This collaboration is set to bring about a new era of AI accessibility for younger audiences, with both entities focusing on creating a safer digital environment for teenagers.
The initiative will see the introduction of a dedicated section for kid-friendly GPTs within OpenAI’s recently launched GPT store. This move aims to address the growing concerns around the use of AI by younger users, offering guidelines and educational resources tailored for children, their parents, and educators. By leveraging Common Sense Media’s expertise in rating media content for child-friendliness, the collaboration will curate a selection of GPTs that are deemed appropriate for family use.
James P. Steyer, the founder and CEO of Common Sense Media, emphasized the goal of ensuring AI’s positive impact on teenagers and families. “Our guides and curation will be designed to educate families and educators about safe, responsible use of ChatGPT, so that we can collectively avoid any unintended consequences of this emerging technology,” Steyer stated.
The partnership was officially announced during Common Sense’s kids and family summit held in San Francisco. OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, addressed the concerns surrounding AI and its appropriateness for children, particularly in educational settings. Contrary to the belief that AI might be harmful to kids, Altman advocated for the integration of AI tools in education, suggesting that learning to use such tools is crucial for the younger generation. “Humans are tool users and we better teach people to use the tools that are going to be out in the world,” Altman remarked. He further projected that with AI’s assistance, future high school seniors would operate at a higher level of abstraction, achieving more than their predecessors.
